WINE TOURING

Coastal Wine Trail \ Coastal Winegrowers of Southeastern New England \ www.coastalwinetrail.com

The Southeastern New England American Viticulture Appellation or SENE AVA (sounds like "sea knee") stretches from Cape Cod and the Islands through the South Coast of Massachusetts and Coastal Rhode Island and Coastal Connecticut. Founded in 1984, the SENE AVA is celebrating a history of 30 years of wine making and growing in 2014.

The common thread through this wine region is our close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and our Southeast facing coastline which captures the warm Gulf Stream waters in the summer and fall. We are a cool grape growing region producing superb white and sparkling wines.

The Coastal Wine Trail winds through the heart of the Southeastern New England AVA. Spend two to three days winding through historic cities and charming villages to visit the nine locally owned wineries that call this region home.

Pick up The Coastal Wine Trail Passport at any one of our wineries to experience world class wines. Our 2014 program runs from February 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015. 2014 Passport winners are listed on the Passport page.

Newport Vineyards \ www.newportvineyards.com

Newport Vineyards was originally planted in 1977 on a hill overlooking Rhode Island Sound with the goal of producing fine wines and as a way of preserving beautiful agricultural land from rapid development. Aquidneck Island is blessed with one of the most desirable farming areas in the country, if not the world.

This extraordinary micro-climate is created by a combination of the warm waters of the Gulf Stream to the south and the moderating effects of Narragansett Bay. These conditions provide a long, cool growing season ideal for developing complex flavors in wine.

Since the original vineyard plantings in the 1970s, Newport Vineyards, under the ownership of John and Paul Nunes, has grown to 60 vineyard acres. Below is timeline of significant events in the history of Newport Vineyards.

The Vineyard Today

Newport Vineyards is the largest grower of wine grapes in New England and is recognized as a landmark attraction in Newport County and continues the tradition of growing quality wines on preserved farmland.

With anticipated completion of early 2015 Newport Vineyards is undergoing a multi-million dollar expansion including Brix Restaurant, a new marketplace and expanded tasting room.

Greenvale Vineyards \ www.greenvale.com

Greenvale Vineyards produces small quantities of exceptional estate grown wines. We are located along the Sakonnet River in Portsmouth, RI, five miles north of downtown Newport.

Come tour the vineyards, taste and learn about delicious wines, enjoy the beautiful tasting room, the lovely views of the vineyards and the river and hear about a piece of cultural history.

We have jazz every Saturday from May through November and a yearlong schedule of concerts and open houses.

Greenvale Vineyards was built by the present generation's Great, Great Great uncle, John Barstow of Boston throughout the early 1860's.

Barstow built Greenvale with some guidance from a book entitled Country Life by landscape theorist Richard Morris Copeland. Planned and designed by noted Boston architect John Hubbard Sturgis, Barstow's intent was to establish a "rural agricultural retreat but one that would provide occupation as well as recreation," as stipulated in Copeland's book.

Greenvale Farm was originally recognized for its prize winning livestock and in the 20th century we hope it will be recognized for its fine wines. Live music on weekends in summer.

Carolyn's Sakonnet Vineyard \ www.sakonnetwine.com

Historic soil that pioneered the New England wine scene.

The vineyard's microclimate and soil conditions resemble the maritime climate of northern France, allowing for production of some of New England's most popular and distinctive wines. Founded in 1975, the Vineyard includes 150 acres of land with 36 of those acres in production, growing award winning wines.

The Sakonnet Tribe and Land

We feel their presence still. Jeweled with their essence, Sakonnet holds a history of natural beauty and plenty crystallized in the earth. Traces of them still bloom. Bound deeply to the earth and its bounty, the Sakonnet people once lived here. In their native tongue, the land was known as "the place where water pours forth."

Influenced by their presence, the earth calls back to its past in its soil, the roots.

With the arrival of a new world, Benjamin Church and the Plymouth settlers planted a legacy… Hear the trees and the wind's sigh smoothing over the vineyard greens. Sounds which recall the great Sakonnet chief Awashonks, immortal in her terrain.

Queen of the Sakonnets, Awashonks led her people with grace and fearlessness. She forged strategic relations with Benjamin Church, an English settler, which blossomed into a lasting friendship.

With striking confidence she saw her people to safety through war, and endured political tensions-both within the community of colonists and her own tribe. Committed to independence and a pioneer in her own right, her deeds are visible to this day-deeds rooted in the earth, the earth woven with history, offering gifts of spiritual plenty.
